Why kindness, and why now

Most guides to a city point you toward things: restaurants, trails, festivals, the best patio on a warm Friday. We love all of that, and you will find plenty of it on Hey Freddy. But a place is not really its buildings. It is the people who decide, over and over, to look out for one another.

Fredericton is small enough that kindness is legible here. You can trace it. The person who shovels three driveways before their own. The retiree who drives a Meals on Wheels route in a January whiteout. The teenager who translates a lease for a family that arrived six weeks ago. None of it trends. All of it matters.

Kind Fredericton exists because we think that work deserves to be seen, named, and thanked out loud. Not to turn quiet people into celebrities, but to remind the rest of us what a good neighbour actually looks like, and how ordinary the ingredients really are.

In praise of the quiet ones

There is a certain kind of person who does a great deal and mentions none of it. They do not post about it. They would be a little embarrassed by a plaque. Ask them what they do and they will change the subject to someone else who, they insist, does far more.

These are the people we most want to profile, precisely because they will never nominate themselves. The volunteer who has quietly sorted donations every Tuesday for years. The neighbour who somehow knows which older folks on the street live alone, and checks. The line cook who sends the day’s leftovers somewhere they will feed someone. The organizer whose name is on nothing but whose fingerprints are on everything.

Loud generosity has its place. But a city runs on the quiet kind, the sort that expects no return and keeps no ledger. That is the kindness we want to hold up to the light.

What Kind Fredericton is

Kind Fredericton is an ongoing series, not a one-off. Every so often the Hey Freddy team sits down with someone who makes this city better and writes an honest, warm profile: who they are, what they do, why they started, and what it costs and gives them.

We are after real texture, not a highlight reel. Where you grew up. The Tuesday that changed your mind. The thing you wish more people understood. We would rather one true detail than a paragraph of praise.

The series is bilingual, like the city, and we are glad to work in English or French, whichever fits the person. Over time these profiles become a small, growing record of Fredericton at its best: proof, gathered one person at a time, that this is a place where people show up for each other.

Who we’re looking for

Almost anyone, honestly, though a few kinds of people come to mind first:

• The volunteer nobody sees. The steady, uncredited hands behind a food bank shift, a warming centre, a community meal, a coat drive.
• The neighbour who checks on everyone. The person who notices when a light stays off too long and knocks on the door.
• The newcomer building community. Someone who arrived recently and, instead of waiting to be welcomed, started welcoming others.
• The person quietly feeding people. A cook, a gardener, a grandmother, anyone who has decided that no one nearby should go hungry.
• The connector. The one who always seems to know who needs what and who can help, and makes the introduction.

You do not need a title, a nonprofit, or a decade of service to qualify. You just need to be quietly making Freddy Beach a kinder place to live.

How to nominate someone

This is the part where you come in. If someone came to mind while reading any of the above, that is exactly who we want to hear about.

The flow is simple, and there are no forms to dread:

1. Tell us who and why. Send us the person’s name and a few sentences on what they do and why it matters to you. A rough note is perfectly fine.
2. We reach out. We gently contact the person to say they have been nominated and to ask if they would be open to a conversation.
3. We ask consent before anything is published. Nothing runs without the person’s clear yes. They see how they are described, and they can decline at any point, no explanation needed.

You are welcome to nominate quietly, and we are happy to keep your name out of it if you would rather the person not know who put them forward.

Individual kindness rarely works alone. Most of the people we hope to feature move through a wider ecosystem of local organizations, and the best way to honour their work is to strengthen the ground they stand on.

If you are moved to help, a few pillars of the Fredericton network are always worth supporting. A note on doing this respectfully

Profiling kindness carries a real risk: turning a person’s generosity into a performance, or worse, into something they never agreed to. We take that seriously.

So a few promises. Consent is not a formality here; it is the whole thing. We ask first, we explain what we are doing, and we let people read how they are described before anything runs. Anyone can say no, or say yes and later change their mind, without owing us a reason.

No surprise cameras. No ambush interviews. No filming or photographing the people someone serves without their clear permission, and never in a way that trades their dignity for a good shot. Some of the best kindness in this city happens around hardship, and the people receiving help are not props.
