Hours and holidays
Sunday shopping is unrestricted in Fredericton under By-law R-12, with one exception: no retail may open on Easter Sunday ($500 to $1,000 fine). The province’s Days of Rest Act closes retail on eleven prescribed days: New Year’s, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, New Brunswick Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas and Boxing Day. Exempt: restaurants, hotels and pubs, gas stations, garden centres, farm stands, drugstores under 850 square metres, antique and craft shops, flea markets, NB Liquor, and shops with three people or fewer selling mainly food, papers, tobacco or confectionery. Only eight of those days are paid public holidays under the Employment Standards Act: Boxing Day, Victoria Day and Thanksgiving are not.
